Wake Forest was one of 200 schools competing in Campus Conservation Nationals 2013. The numerous tweets were only a side-effect of the massive word of mouth contribution in eliciting excitement in the competition, as well as promotion through t-shirts, frisbees made from recycled plastic, sunglasses, light-bulb swaps, and more. These efforts provoked a handsome number of students listed on the Energy Dashboard who committed to conserve, that number being 3,563. The number of commitments increased by 107 students from last year’s competition. Despite the subtle increase of stated online commitments, it is clear that the actual savings in electricity and water were immensely greater. This conclusion only gives us hope for the following years of what more online commitments could do for the level of savings in both areas.

With the collaborative efforts from Facilities & Campus Services, Residence Life & Housing, Office of Sustainability, EcoReps, and enthusiastic volunteers, the competition kept up its energy in reducing it for the full three weeks during March 18 through April 7. The first week of the competition began the Monday after spring break, springing its first initiatives with a Kickoff event scheduled the Tuesday of that week. The musical and summery event attracted many students to the Magnolia quad to learn about the opportunities of saving energy on campus. We came out with a total of 79 room assessment signups, where an EcoRep will simply go to a student’s room and ask them about 10 questions regarding his or her electricity and water consumption habits. The goal of the room assessments is to spread the word about the easy and feasible ways of reducing energy consumption every day, as well as facilitating a hands-on experience to teach solutions to energy abuse, and also explain its importance to peers.

Other beneficial components of the competition involve the light-bulb swap, where a student brings in an incandescent light bulb to swap with a 75% more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulb. These light bulbs were also given out as incentives for quiz and room assessment participation. Other incentives included appealing t-shirts and frisbees made from recycled plastic both passing on information about the building dashboard website and the competition itself.

It is important to stress that heating or cooling were not considered during the competition as they are supplied from the campus physical plants and not recorded on the building electric meters. The complications of collaborating these networks were far too outreaching at this stage of Wake Forest’s involvement in the competition. Futuristically, incorporating as many facets of energy consumption into the competition is a priority. However, it is clear that the main foci of electricity and water reduction already encompass much of the student’s commitment, and still holds potential to be greatly reduced in future years.

Many ideas have been thrown around in regards to methods of approaching the competition next year more effectively, ranging in organization, preparation, motivation, communication, and consistency. It’s exciting to ruminate on ways to increase Wake Forest’s reduction seeing as the difference between this year and last year’s results have been substantially gratifying!! Facilities & Campus Services would like to thank Residence Life & Housing for your greater contribution in the facilitation and arrangement of the competition. We would also, and especially, like to thank all students, faculty, and staff who played a role in the competition, your contribution is plain to see and immensely appreciated–we would be nowhere without the joint efforts!

We are enthusiastic to go forward with Campus Conservation Nationals for our 3rd year in a row, continually decreasing our energy consumption, increasing our campus-wide involvement, and most of all, our love for our planet.

Health Effects of Mold:

Since mold spores are present in our surroundings, it is impossible to prevent exposure. There are even molds that naturally grow on human skin, unbeknownst to the host. Most people have little to no reaction to mold, although some people who suffer from allergies may have increased sensitivity, as is noted in the following article from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

CCN2012 was the first time WFU participated in a Residence Hall conservation competition and our students responded very favorably.

WFU was one of the top 5 reducers of water in this competition out of all the schools competing. One of the most positive aspects seen of our WFU student body was the number of students listed on the Energy Dashboard who committed to conserve - 3,456. By committing to conserve through their social media accounts, students show their interest in being more responsible citizens of the world.

Commitments to Conserve:

Want to see more of the Results and party pictures??

Students, faculty and staff watched the competition with keen interest from March 30th to April 20th. In the beginning, several students thought that South Hall would have the advantage because of more modern building systems. Since the competition is only for the elements that can be affected by students themselves, we explained this was not the case. Heating or cooling were not considered during the competition as they are supplied from the campus physical plants. The competition was only about which residence hall students could conserve the most with activities such as turning off lighting, turning off plug loads and reducing the consumption of electricity and water.

Facilities & Campus Services and Residence Life & Housing partnered in some of the programs for promoting CCN2012. The light bulb swap program was effective when students were asked to swap their incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs. The bulbs had a tag explaining the competition and the website information. Informational t- shirts were distributed to the student leaders who went and talked to others door to door to explain the significance of the competition.

During the first two weeks, usage was lower than the baseline and, by the third week, climbing usage levels began to average closer to the baseline. Some results were impacted by the fact that, although the newer buildings had more efficient systems, they had less occupant control.

We have learned a lot regarding communication with our students and staff from this experience. Residence Hall Captains have also learned what steps they need to take in the future to be more effective in their communication and outreach programs. Facilities & Campus Services would like to thank all the freshman students for participating and Residence Life & Housing for helping students with day-to-day activities.

We look forward to this competition next year with more fun, enthusiasm and love for our planet.

Welcome!

Soon, two new residence halls will emerge on North Campus to provide much needed on-campus housing accommodations. These two new residence halls are well situated on North Campus with commanding views back to Main Campus and Wait Chapel.

Opening August 2013

Site work for both new North Campus Residence Halls is now fully underway. Foundation work for both buildings should be complete by early Summer and the structure of both buildings will become evident by mid Summer. The buildings should begin taking shape going into early Fall and be under roof shortly thereafter.

Utility work that will service both buildings will be taking place in Q lot for most of the summer but the majority of this lot will remain open at all times. Pedestrian routes should remain unchanged during this utility work. Please use caution as you navigate through this area.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the Q lot utility work may cause. Please bear with us as we construct these very important projects that will truly benefit the Wake Forest Experience.

Progress! We’re right on track to open fall semester 2013. The “2011 big dig” went quite well. In conjunction with the Carroll Weathers road relocation project we successfully rebuilt roads and reconnected all site utilities around the Farrell Hall project site. In August we literally dug in with as many as nine excavating machines. Placement of footings and basement wall wrapped up in late fall of 2011 and we reached our goal of setting structural steel up to the attic floor by Jan of 2012.

February, March and April of 2012 look to be very busy onsite with placement of concrete deck slabs, the beginning of the exterior wall studs and prep work for masonry. Large attic mounted HVAC equipment – in production offsite – will be tucked to campus and gently lofted by crane to the top deck before our roof in placement begins.

Thanks again to the entire campus community for your patience and understanding during the construction process.
