Wake Forest University in Top 5 for Water Conservation again this year!

Congratulations Palmer and Piccolo Hall residents for winning the WFU CCN2013 by accomplishing the greatest reduction in electricity consumption with a 23.4% reduction, yielding 9,532 kWh saved. This is very exciting due to the fact that these two buildings are the least energy efficient on account of its original construction intended for temporary use! Way to go!

Congratulations again Palmer and Piccolo Hall residents for also winning WFU CCN2013 by reducing their water consumption by 35.1%, saving 16,823 gallons of water! Wake Forest was among the top 5 schools with greatest average percent reduction in water!

This is equivalent to 11,208 shower hours or 67,248 ten-minute showers and also equivalent to 10,759,945 plastic water bottles.

Wake Forest was one of 200 schools competing in Campus Conservation Nationals 2013. The numerous tweets were only a side-effect of the massive word of mouth contribution in eliciting excitement in the competition, as well as promotion through t-shirts, frisbees made from recycled plastic, sunglasses, light-bulb swaps, and more. These efforts provoked a handsome number of students listed on the Energy Dashboard who committed to conserve, that number being 3,563. The number of commitments increased by 107 students from last year’s competition. Despite the subtle increase of stated online commitments, it is clear that the actual savings in electricity and water were immensely greater. This conclusion only gives us hope for the following years of what more online commitments could do for the level of savings in both areas.

With the collaborative efforts from Facilities & Campus Services, Residence Life & Housing, Office of Sustainability, EcoReps, and enthusiastic volunteers, the competition kept up its energy in reducing it for the full three weeks during March 18 through April 7. The first week of the competition began the Monday after spring break, springing its first initiatives with a Kickoff event scheduled the Tuesday of that week. The musical and summery event attracted many students to the Magnolia quad to learn about the opportunities of saving energy on campus. We came out with a total of 79 room assessment signups, where an EcoRep will simply go to a student’s room and ask them about 10 questions regarding his or her electricity and water consumption habits. The goal of the room assessments is to spread the word about the easy and feasible ways of reducing energy consumption every day, as well as facilitating a hands-on experience to teach solutions to energy abuse, and also explain its importance to peers.

Other beneficial components of the competition involve the light-bulb swap, where a student brings in an incandescent light bulb to swap with a 75% more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulb. These light bulbs were also given out as incentives for quiz and room assessment participation. Other incentives included appealing t-shirts and frisbees made from recycled plastic both passing on information about the building dashboard website and the competition itself.

It is important to stress that heating or cooling were not considered during the competition as they are supplied from the campus physical plants and not recorded on the building electric meters. The complications of collaborating these networks were far too outreaching at this stage of Wake Forest’s involvement in the competition. Futuristically, incorporating as many facets of energy consumption into the competition is a priority. However, it is clear that the main foci of electricity and water reduction already encompass much of the student’s commitment, and still holds potential to be greatly reduced in future years. 

Many ideas have been thrown around in regards to methods of approaching the competition next year more effectively, ranging in organization, preparation, motivation, communication, and consistency. It’s exciting to ruminate on ways to increase Wake Forest’s reduction seeing as the difference between this year and last year’s results have been substantially gratifying!! Facilities & Campus Services would like to thank Residence Life & Housing for your greater contribution in the facilitation and arrangement of the competition. We would also, and especially, like to thank all students, faculty, and staff who played a role in the competition, your contribution is plain to see and immensely appreciated–we would be nowhere without the joint efforts!

We are enthusiastic to go forward with Campus Conservation Nationals for our 3rd year in a row, continually decreasing our energy consumption, increasing our campus-wide involvement, and most of all, our love for our planet.
