Fire and Life Safety
Fire and Life Safety at Wake Forest University is responsible for developing and maintaining fire prevention, safety, and emergency evacuation programs across campus. Duties include conducting safety inspections, ensuring compliance with fire codes, managing fire alarm systems, managing sprinklers, coordinating fire drills, and training to prepare the campus community for emergencies. This work is vital because it helps prevent fires, minimizes hazards, while ensuring that everyone knows how to respond quickly and safely in case of an emergency. These combined efforts protect lives, property, and maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Hands-On Fire Extinguisher Training

As the department has grown, the Fire Life Safety team has expanded its ability to provide hands-on fire extinguisher training for campus staff and students. Small groups participate in controlled demonstrations that allow individuals to safely experience how extinguishers operate while learning the basic principles of fire safety. This setting helps participants build confidence and understand how to respond appropriately during an emergency. The program uses discussion and examples from Wake Forest University facilities to reinforce practical fire safety knowledge before participants complete hands-on extinguisher use.
Charcoal Production Demonstration and Fire Safety Training

An Assistant Teaching Professor requested assistance in producing charcoal for classroom instruction, with the goal of providing students a controlled and safe environment to expand their skills using charcoal. The Fire Life Safety team worked with the instructor to identify an appropriate location on campus and conduct a successful charcoal production demonstration. During the event, the team also discussed fire safety practices and proper evacuation procedures during fire alarms. The session concluded with questions and scenario discussions related to potential fire situations on campus.
