Construction Progress – Bostwick-Johnson Residence Halls

Main Content

November 3rd, 2021 – August 17th, 2022

Bostwick and Johnson Residence Halls are nearing completion in preparation for new residents to occupy in mid-August.  Both buildings have enhanced accessibility including the four-story additions to each entry featuring new elevators and two-story entrance lobbies.  Interior spaces are currently receiving all new finishes and painting, including new luxury vinyl plank flooring, tiled bathrooms, carpeted corridors, and common spaces.  Common areas are more open and feature communal kitchen spaces with new cabinetry and appliances.  Many of the exterior entrances have received accessible paths and transitions which were previously inaccessible.  The site will be receiving new sod and landscaping.  The axial view of Reynolda Hall from Collins is framed by a new exterior stairway and accessible ramp.

Work may continue through August on the ramp and stairs between the buildings due to delays on granite shipment, but both buildings will be fully occupied after Freshman move-in on August 17th.

Lot N Shuttle Hub Project

Main Content

May 17, 2022 – August 15, 2022

Shuttle Hub Project/Lot N: Construction fencing was installed in May 2022 at Lot N.  Due to unforeseen conditions, the right-hand turn lane addition at the Wake Forest Road/Lot N intersection phase of the project will be delayed to a later date.

Shelters are being installed.  Concrete pours are happening now and in the coming weeks. There will be a fenced-in construction laydown area in the upper part of Lot P; through traffic will not be affected. We expect the Shuttle Hub project to be completed (barring any unforeseen circumstances) by August 15.

Please contact Kim Jackson, WFU Project Manager at jackkv@wfu.edu with any questions or concerns. Periodic updates will be issued as the need arises to ensure the campus community is aware of important information.

Kitchin Residence Hall and BSA Lounge Moisture Intrusion – Upper and Lower Level at Hearn Plaza Stairs

Main Content

May 20, 2022 – August 1, 2022

Construction fencing was installed in May at the upper level of Hearn Plaza at Kitchin Residence Hall (by the stairs to Lot M) as well as on the lower level surrounding the stairs and the BSA Lounge patio.

Access to the stairs will be unavailable while excavation and waterproofing of an exterior wall occurs. Also, on the upper level, expect periodic construction traffic from to and from Lot N – Deacon Shop will remain open for business, however, there may be short periods of pedestrian restriction for construction traffic to flow. Once the project is complete on the Hearn Plaza level, the contractor will reopen access to the stairs and Lot M on one side only – there will still be construction work remaining in the lounge and on the lounge roof. We expect this project to be completed (barring any unforeseen circumstances) by the end of July.

Please contact Kim Jackson, WFU Project Manager at jackkv@wfu.edu with any questions or concerns.

Miller Center Exterior Repairs

Construction work began on Miller Center in mid-May.  Fencing has been installed around the inside of the track in Kentner Stadium taking up four outer lanes of the track.  Additional fencing has been installed on the terrace above, in the space between Manchester and Miller and in the space between the Sutton Center and the track.  Portions of Lot L near Deacon Health will remain fenced off during the Fall Semester.   Both the ramp and the stairs leading to the Miller Center terrace have been closed in order to replace them.  Miller Center building users will access the upper floors from the Manchester / Pruitt side, by entering the lower entrance and using the elevator and stairs within the building.  Since Miller is accessed by a card reader, only building users with access will use this route.  All other staff, students and faculty needing to traverse to the Palmer and Piccolo buildings as well as the former Anthropology building, east of the track, are directed around the North side of Kentner Stadium along Wake Forest Road and Carroll Weathers Drive.  Due to unforeseen conditions, the ramp and stair will remain closed until they are fully replaced.  The project is scheduled to be completed on December 1, 2022.  Anyone needing accessibility accommodations for access to the Miller elevator should contact Sam Binkley in Facilities at 336-758-4899 to determine the appropriate plan.

Wake Forest Road Extension/Lot B

With the exception of a few punch list items, Lot B’s work has completed.  The remaining work at the intersection of Wake Forest Road at Lot B will begin the week of 7/25. Lot B and the Lot B/Wake Forest Road intersection will be closed 7/27-7/29.  Wake Forest Road will be closed to through traffic at the intersection during this time, and traffic will be turned around using Lot p and Lot C. Wake Forest Road/Scales intersection will be down to single-lane traffic intermittently during this time.  In the meantime, progress on the road through Davis Field is well underway.  The intersection at Scales and Lower Davis Field is done and will await the final crosswalk and paving to be completed along with the road through the field.

In August the majority of the road work will be finished however, stormwater infrastructure at Lower Davis Field will still be in progress due to long lead materials.  Construction is scheduled to complete on September 23rd.

McCreary Football Complex

In July the project will continue foundations, shear walls, and slab-on-grade pours.  Waterproofing follows these activities throughout.  Steel is expected in early August.

Beginning 7/18 work on the sanitary sewer tie-in will begin in the HS Moore north parking lot.  This will impact the Landscaping and EH&S buildings both in terms of water and sewer utilities and also traffic access to the buildings.

Construction is slated to complete in Q1 2023.

Men’s and Women’s Basketball Locker Rooms

Final paint is underway and rulon wood ceilings are nearing completion.  Completing HVAC point-to-point controls & preliminary testing.  Overhead lighting installation is in mid-process.

Specialty graphics will begin installation on 7/18.  Finishes for the monumental staircase and east and west staircases have yet to begin.  Locker fabrication and installation is the biggest schedule concern at this time; slated for mid-August.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is slated for 9/1.
