2024 ANNUAL REPORT

Groundbreaking

A significant milestone was reached on Saturday, December 7, 2024, as Carter and Front Street Capital hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for The Grounds. Over 200 guests joined in celebrating the commencement of construction for this transformative 100-acre mixed-use development, a collaborative effort between Wake Forest University, the City of Winston-Salem, and the developers. The event recognized the vision, hard work, and partnerships that brought the project to fruition, and marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the space, the university, the city, and the region. The project’s success and future potential are a testament to the strong public-private partnership, shared vision, and dedicated teamwork demonstrated by all involved, as highlighted by the speakers at the groundbreaking.

Facilities, Real Estate and Planning plays a vital role in “The Grounds,” a transformative mixed-use development project in partnership with Carter, Front Street Capital, and the City of Winston-Salem. While not the sole managing entity, our department contributes significantly to the project’s success. Our involvement includes campus land use planning, infrastructure coordination, input on design elements related to campus integration, and ensuring a seamless connection between the university and “The Grounds.” This project represents a significant enhancement to the university’s surrounding area and a valuable community asset, and Facilities, Real Estate and Planning is committed to supporting its ongoing development.

The Last Resort Demolition

A familiar landmark near campus, “The Last Resort,” was demolished to make way for The Grounds project. This transition in the landscape surrounding the university paves the way for the exciting mixed-use development and its future contributions to the community.
